The AFMTE Educator Certification Program is currently a voluntary portfolio review process through which educators can demonstrate they have achieved proficiency in the Core Competencies for Massage Therapy Teachers. Why?

The massage and bodywork field is experiencing challenges: reduced number of students, programs closing, increased expectations from regulatory agencies and the healthcare system. And the system is becoming more selective. As more and more practitioners are working within healthcare, consistency in educational standards will be vital. I believe this has to start with the foundation—the educators. Skilled educators have the biggest impact on the long-term success of every program.

There are many excellent educators with little or no formal teacher training; yet, they have developed the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes over time. The CMBE offers a pathway for those educators to demonstrate competency. This is important to the credibility of the whole field, as well as the potential impact it could have on employment opportunities and salaries.

If you believe that the quality of educators shapes the future success of the entire massage and bodywork field, then we strongly encourage you to learn more about this program.
